Knocking instead of clapping

Germany is a country with peculiar habits. And German students know that very well.

When a German Professor finishes its class at University, instead of clapping students begin to knock loudly their desks. In Friedhelm Golücke opinion, this ritual comes from XVIII century, when students used to knock with their hands to show their disappointment, then changed into a positive sign of satisfaction.

Nokter Hammerstein, instead, gives this tradition a different origin: since they were too concerned and busy while writing, students used use just one hand to compliment their professor, and so they started knocking instead of clapping their hands.
