One of the first thing that will catch your eyes in Istanbul will be for sure the brightness of the colours and the strong mixture of scents: musk, wool, dust, age.
If you follow this scent you will probably end up standing in front of peculiar shops, with bunches of products enrolled, you will touch them and discover the texture of the most appreciated products in Istanbul: carpets.
Within minutes carpet dealers will be tossing piece after piece onto the floor with a flourish, pausing for effect between each one.
In a town where the art of carpet dealing these days too often means the peddling of new and ill-made pieces from Pakistan and China, dealers ware amounted to a most exceptional find — a collection consisting of mostly antique Turkish rugs and flat-woven kilims highlighted by well-aged natural dyes matched with the poetic textures of handspun wool.
